Kean University is set to introduce a new initiative aimed at supporting student internships through financial assistance. The Professional Development Internship Fund (PDIF) pilot program, approved by the Board of Trustees on December 7, will launch in 2025 with an initial funding of $200,000.

The program will offer $2,500 stipends for students undertaking unpaid internships and an additional $250 grant to cover expenses like transportation and business attire. "Internships are a vital bridge between academic learning and professional success," stated Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. He emphasized the program's role in promoting equity by making internships accessible to all students regardless of their financial background.

Eligible students must have completed 60 credits and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8. The initiative also includes career development workshops focusing on resume writing, interview skills, and strategies for internship success. Participants will work with Kean alumni on promotional efforts to secure ongoing donor support.

Felice Vazquez, senior vice president for planning and special counsel to the president, noted that many students face challenges in taking unpaid internships due to work commitments. "By launching this pilot program, we are empowering students to gain the real-world experiences they need to thrive in their chosen fields," she said.

The university plans a thorough evaluation of the program's impact on student retention, career outcomes, and post-graduation employment. Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives John C. Raue highlighted the focus on enhancing student experience: "We are committed to evaluating how this pilot adds value to students' academic and professional journeys while continuously refining its approach to maximize impact."
