Kean University’s undergraduate Class of 2024 celebrated their graduation with family, friends, and a speech from renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ph.D. The ceremony took place on Thursday, May 16, at the Prudential Center in Newark, where over 2,800 bachelor’s degrees were awarded.

Tyson emphasized the importance of lifelong learning. “You want to climb higher? Be ready to do some climbing after you get out,” he said. Known for his television appearances on PBS Nova and The Big Bang Theory, Tyson concluded his address with a challenge to the graduates: “Rise up to this challenge. Make decisions in the interest of our health, our wealth, our security.”

Tyson was honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his contributions to astrophysics. Patricia Graleski also received an honorary doctorate for her support of Kean University.

Kean President Lamont O. Repollet addressed the graduates as "his class," noting many began their studies when he started as president during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. “Graduates, your stories inspire us all,” he said.

Among those celebrating were Jaclyn Smith from Brick and Marcus House from Montclair. Smith earned her degree in business management while House completed a degree in criminal justice as a student-athlete. Roselor Jules from West Orange earned her second college degree at age 55 in public health and dedicated it to her late mother.

Carlette Halley from Jersey City cheered for her daughter Yah'na Halley who graduated with a psychology degree. Valedictorian Maliha Haider and Senior Class President Glynnis Tan delivered reflections thanking friends, family, faculty, and staff.

The ceremony included students receiving their degrees and turning tassels on their caps amid applause. Among them was Alyson Ballard from Brick who overcame challenges related to cerebral palsy to earn her liberal arts degree online.

Kean University also held its Graduate Commencement ceremony on Tuesday, May 14.
