The Town of Westfield announced on Mar. 31 a series of community events to mark Earth Month in April and May 2026. Activities will include a Free Market, native plant sale and pickup, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities aimed at promoting sustainability.
These events encourage residents to participate in environmentally friendly practices by sharing reusable items, supporting local wildlife through native planting, and volunteering to maintain public spaces.
The Free Market is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at the South Avenue Train Station Lot. Residents can donate yard-sale-quality items such as clothing, kitchenware, sports equipment, books, and garden tools from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM with pre-registration required for donation slots. Browsing and item pickup will be open from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at no cost. The initiative aims to reduce landfill waste by giving still-usable items a new home. Volunteer sign-up is available for those interested in assisting with the event.
On Saturday, May 2 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Westfield Memorial Library, residents who ordered native plants through the Great Swamp Watershed Association can pick up their purchases. The plant sale offers kits tailored for various garden conditions as well as individual species suitable for supporting birds and beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. Educational activities about sustainable landscaping and natural pest control will be held during pickup hours; children are welcome to participate. A library book sale will take place simultaneously.
Additionally, on Sunday, May 3 from 10:00 AM until noon, volunteers are invited to help beautify Westfield’s parks. Families and groups such as Scout troops are encouraged to join by bringing gardening gloves; advance sign-up is recommended.
