The Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) has issued a warning to residents about a phone scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers. These scammers falsely inform victims that they have an arrest warrant due to missing jury duty or failing to appear for a court date, demanding immediate payment of fines to avoid arrest.
To add credibility, the fraudsters spoof official law enforcement phone numbers, use real names of officials, and send fake warrant documents with the victim’s name. The UCSO emphasizes that these calls are attempts to steal money from unsuspecting individuals.
“WHEN IN DOUBT, HANG UP! Law enforcement agencies will NEVER request payment over the phone to avoid arrest, cancel a warrant, or make threats if action is not taken,” stated the UCSO. “We will also never request payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency.”
Residents are advised to refuse such requests and terminate the call immediately. No report is necessary unless someone falls victim to these scams. In such cases, contacting local law enforcement agencies to file a police report is recommended.
