The Union County Board of County Commissioners and the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs have rescheduled the event, “The Lenape: Native Americans, New Jersey, and American History,” to Tuesday, March 31st at 6:00 p.m. The presentation will take place in the Auditorium of the Trailside Nature and Science Center at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside.
Dr. Sean P. Harvey, a history professor from Seton Hall University, will lead the session. His expertise includes Colonial America, Revolutionary America, Native American History before Removal, and other related subjects. Dr. Harvey is also known for his book Native Tongues: Colonialism and Race from Encounter to the Reservation and serves on various editorial boards and advisory councils related to early American studies.
This event is part of Union County’s ongoing series marking the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Attendees are required to pre-register at ucnj.org/250.
Union County Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek stated: “Engaging in history seminars, such as our Lenape speaking event, allows us to gain valuable insights into our ancestors and what their day-to-day experience was. This exploration fosters a deeper appreciation for the rights and freedoms we enjoy alongside our fellow Americans today. Join us in learning together about the rich history of our land as we continue celebrating our 250th anniversary all throughout the year. I hope to see you all there.”
A countywide calendar has been established for municipalities and organizations to submit their commemorative programs for review and inclusion. More information on upcoming events can be found at www.ucnj.org/250.
Union County Commissioner Rebecca Williams, Chair to the Union County 250th Committee, said: “We’re excited to continue adding events to this calendar throughout the year, giving our residents and guests plenty of opportunities to celebrate this significant moment in our history together. I encourage any historical organizations and local community groups to submit their 250th Anniversary events to our email for review.”
Community members are encouraged to submit their anniversary-related activities through the official event calendar available online.
The event receives partial support from a grant provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission under the Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs.
