The Union County Board of County Commissioners announced on Mar. 24 that it will offer a free self-defense class for women ages 18 and older on Wednesday, April 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The session will take place at the John H. Stamler Police Academy at 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains.

The event aims to provide women with practical skills and knowledge to enhance their personal safety and confidence. Organizers say the program is part of ongoing efforts to support awareness and empowerment within the community.

“We’re proud to offer self-defense classes for women that support confidence, awareness, and connection within our community,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek. “These classes break down simple, effective ways to stay aware and trust your instincts. Everyone deserves to feel confident in their ability to protect themselves.”

Titled ‘Empower & Protect: Self-Defense Essentials for Women 18 and Over,’ the class is led by experienced law enforcement professionals who will teach hands-on techniques, situational awareness, and strategies for responding to potential threats.

Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli said, “Every class brings in a new group of participants, which tells us these sessions are really making an impact. It’s encouraging to see so many women prioritizing their awareness and safety while building the confidence they need to feel more prepared in their everyday lives.”

Space is limited for this event, so registration is required. Participants are encouraged to register with a friend or family member due to partnered practice during the session. A waiver must be completed before taking part in hands-on activities, and attendees should wear comfortable gym attire.

More information about registration can be found at www.ucnj.org/women or by contacting Jennifer Erdos at the Union County Office on Women by phone or email.
