Emmy-nominated actor Giancarlo Esposito is set to share his experiences in the entertainment industry and discuss his journey as a biracial actor at Kean University's President’s Distinguished Lecture Series on February 4. Known for his roles in film, theatre, and television, including the AMC series Breaking Bad, Esposito will launch the university's Black History Month celebrations with a lecture titled "Breaking Barriers: Giancarlo Esposito on Art, Identity, and Redefining Success." The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the North Avenue Academic Building.
Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet expressed enthusiasm about Esposito's participation, stating that "The President's Distinguished Lecture Series brings to our campus transformative voices who share unique perspectives on today's most relevant issues." He added that "Giancarlo Esposito's remarkable journey and achievements will resonate deeply with our students and community, inspiring them to pursue their own paths to success."
Darlene Repollet, Kean’s First Lady and former corporate human resources executive, will moderate a question-and-answer session with Esposito during the event.
Esposito has gained recognition for playing both villainous and inspirational characters. His portrayal of Gustavo “Gus” Fring in Breaking Bad earned him an Emmy nomination and a Critic’s Choice Award. Recently seen in Netflix's The Gentlemen, he is also set to appear in upcoming projects such as Captain America: Brave New World, Electric State, and The Residence.
Born in Europe to a Black American opera singer mother and an Italian theatrical set builder father, Esposito moved to the United States at a young age. He began his acting career on Broadway at age eight. At Kean University, he plans to speak openly about embracing his racial identity as part of his acting persona while encouraging attendees to pursue their passions.
In addition to sharing insights from his career during the lecture series, Esposito is expected to release a memoir detailing his life story.
The President’s Distinguished Lecture Series hosts various notable speakers throughout the academic year. Past speakers have included former U.S. Senator Al Franken; human rights leader Ndaba Mandela; and autism advocate Temple Grandin.
Technology writer Kara Swisher is scheduled for an upcoming lecture on April 28 as part of this series.
Tickets for these lectures are free for Kean students, faculty, and staff but limited to one per person. Alumni and public tickets are priced at $20 each. Reservations are required.
