Kean University is set to expand its academic offerings with the introduction of a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence. These programs aim to address the increasing demand for advanced technology education.

"Kean continues to shape the future of higher education, reinforcing its role as both an anchor institution and a leading research university in New Jersey," stated President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. "These new programs embody our commitment to creating pathways of opportunity for our students while addressing the critical technological needs of our society and state."

The Kean Board of Trustees gave their approval for these programs during their meeting on December 7. The next step involves submitting them to the New Jersey President’s Council Academic Issues Committee for review and approval. The AI program could begin enrolling students by Fall 2025, with the Ph.D. program potentially starting in the following academic year.

These initiatives are part of Kean's strategy to meet global workforce demands and enhance STEM education excellence.

"These innovative programs showcase Kean's responsiveness to industry needs and our role as a forward-thinking research university," said Steve Fastook ’06, chair of the Kean University Board of Trustees. "We're creating an educational environment where market demands and academic excellence converge to foster personal achievement and professional success."

The Ph.D. program will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science, preparing graduates for significant roles in research, academia, and industry.

The Bachelor’s program aims to start with 25 students, equipping them for leadership positions across various sectors. This initiative aligns with Governor Murphy’s AI plans and supports AI education growth in New Jersey.

"In proposing these programs, we are doing more than meeting current demand – we're laying the groundwork for a university-wide integration of AI education," explained David Birdsell, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. "This comprehensive approach ensures our students are prepared for today's challenges and equipped to lead tomorrow's innovations."

Both programs will benefit from Kean's investments in facilities, faculty expertise, and cross-disciplinary research initiatives, offering students practical experience through advanced technological resources.

"We stand at a pivotal moment where expertise in computer science and artificial intelligence is essential," remarked Patricia Morreale, Ph.D., professor and chair of computer science and technology. "Through these programs, Kean University stands ready to empower students from all backgrounds to become leaders in fields that are reshaping our world."
