The Kean University Board of Trustees has approved a plan to accommodate hundreds of Union Township elementary students at its Union campus for the remainder of the academic year. This decision comes in response to the closure of Hannah Caldwell Elementary School due to mold issues.

The affected students, from over 30 classrooms, will temporarily relocate to the fourth floor and part of the third floor at Kean's 1085 Morris Avenue facility. The university recently acquired this building and is offering it free of charge to Union Township Public Schools. In addition, Kean’s College of Education will work with the district to create experiential learning opportunities for its students.

Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D., expressed support for this initiative: “As an anchor institution, Kean is pleased to support the Union Township community in its time of need,” he said. “This partnership allows us to provide these young learners a safe and supportive environment. We are proud to help ensure their education continues uninterrupted while strengthening the bonds between our University and the community we serve.”

Steve Fastook 'H06, Chair of the Board of Trustees, emphasized the university's commitment: “This agreement underscores Kean’s dedication to being a strong and reliable partner to the community,” Fastook stated. “We are happy to step up and support Union Township Public Schools during this challenging time, reinforcing our role as a trusted neighbor and community anchor.”

Acting Dean Sancha Gray, Ed.D., highlighted how this collaboration benefits Kean students: “This partnership provides an opportunity for Kean’s College of Education students to engage in hands-on learning experiences,” Gray explained. “By working directly with Union Township Public Schools, our future educators will gain valuable insights and practical skills that will shape their careers.”

Classes for Hannah Caldwell Elementary students at Kean's facility are set to begin on Monday, November 18, continuing through the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. Both institutions are collaborating closely for a smooth transition for students and families, with a parent night scheduled for Sunday, November 17.
