Kean University has named the rehearsal space in Wilkins Theatre as the Ellen Arlene Brautigan ’78 Rehearsal Hall. This decision by the university’s Board of Trustees honors Brautigan’s notable contributions and dedication to Kean.
Brautigan, a 1978 graduate with a degree in business, significantly impacted the university through her service on the Alumni Association board and her philanthropic efforts until her passing in 2022. Her estate bequeathed over $500,000 to support students in music and theatre programs.
“Arlene’s generosity exemplifies the profound impact that alumni can have on their alma mater,” stated Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “Her gift honors her love for Kean and reinforces our mission of fostering a culture of philanthropy.”
In addition to naming the rehearsal hall, two endowed scholarship funds will be established in Brautigan’s name: the Arlene Brautigan Endowed Music Scholarship Fund and the Arlene Brautigan Endowed Theatre Scholarship Fund. Two departmental funds will also be created to further enhance opportunities in music and theatre at Kean.
Steve Fastook H’06, chair of the Board of Trustees, remarked, “It’s a terrific way to honor the contributions and leadership that Arlene demonstrated to this community for so many years.”
Brautigan was raised in Union, New Jersey, and worked in human resources at companies like Allied Chemical and Liz Claiborne Fashions. Despite her business career, she had a passion for music, especially jazz.
Lori Funicello from the Kean University Foundation said, “Arlene felt such a strong connection to Kean through our music program.”
Her legacy includes establishing a scholarship fund in memory of her brother for music students. She was also known for mentoring students and supporting equity and excellence at Kean.
“There is no doubt that Arlene cared deeply about her alma mater,” said Ed Esposito ’69, ’72 M.A., president of the Alumni Association. He emphasized that her final gift would have an enduring impact on future generations at Kean.
