Former U.S. Senator Al Franken recently launched the Kean University President’s Distinguished Lecture Series with a discussion on the current presidential race and his experiences in both the Senate and as part of Saturday Night Live.
Franken addressed an audience of faculty, students, and community members, mixing political insights with humor. Reflecting on the upcoming presidential election, he stated, “Everything tells us this is going to be a 50/50 deal,” highlighting uncertainties about polling accuracy.
Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet introduced Franken as the first of five distinguished speakers for the year. Repollet emphasized the series’ goal: “When Kean started this lecture series, the goal was to bring some of the best thought leaders of our time to campus — people who challenge us to think critically, expand our horizons, and, most importantly, inspire us to take action in the world.”
Franken shared his dual perspective from serving in high-level government positions and being a writer-performer on SNL. His legislative accomplishments include contributing to passing the Affordable Care Act. He remarked, “The Affordable Care Act is an enormous achievement.”
Moderated by John Wooten from Premiere Stages at Kean University, Franken encouraged civic engagement among students. “This is why our country is our country. It’s a democracy,” he said.
Franken also recounted his tenure on SNL: “We did some amazingly great stuff.” He noted that his comedic skills benefited him in politics: “My sense of humor worked to my advantage in the Senate.”
Post-lecture activities included book signings and photo opportunities with attendees. Rashaad Coulotte, a Kean graduate student, found Franken’s stories insightful and personal. Barry Goldenberg expressed long-time admiration for Franken’s work in both comedy and politics.
Upcoming speakers in the lecture series include Ndaba Mandela on November 14 and Temple Grandin on December 5. Lectures are held at Kean’s Union campus with tickets available online.
